Das, Braja M. Fundamentals of Geotechnical Engineering-3rd Edition. Cengage Learning 2008.
Course Description:
This course acquaints the student with the importance of soils as a construction material. The student performs basic laboratory tests. The design of footings is covered.
Prerequisites:  MATH1740
Corequisites:None
Requirement:  This is a required course for Civil Construction concentration.
General Course Goals /Objectives
CO-1   Learn how to measure basic properties of soils [PO-1, PO-3, PO-4, PO-5]
CO-2   Ability to analyze and interpret lab data and develop good technical reporting and data presentation skills. [PO-1, PO-3, PO-4, PO-5]
CO-3   Understand the calculations for design of foundations based on bearing capacity considerations. [PO-4] 
Program Outcomes:
PO-1  Communicate effectively through proper use of oral, written, and graphic skills.
           Proficiency is demonstrated in lab exercises and exit exams in the following courses:
ARCH 1224, ARCH 1244, ARCH 2644, ARCH 2714, ARCH 2744, ARCH 2824, CCET
1010, CCET2623, CCET2633 and INET 1004.
PO-3  Function effectively in teams-demonstrating a cooperative effort to implement plans of
action to problem solving. Proficiency is demonstrated in lab exercisesand exit exams in
the following courses: ARCH 2644, CCET 1010, CCET2623, and CCET2633.
PO-4  Employ logical and concise problem solving techniques to complex problems.
           Proficiency is demonstrated in lab exercises and exit exams in the followingcourses: 
ARCH 2714, CCET 1010, CCET 2203, CCET2623, CCET2633 and MEET 1154.
PO-5  Demonstrate a thorough knowledge of common construction materials-both their  proper
usage and testing procedures. Proficiency is demonstrated in lab exercisesand exit exams
in the following courses: ARCH 1224, ARCH 1244, CCET2623 and CCET2633.
